It is a genetically transmitted disease that causes copper to accumulate in organs such as the liver, brain, and eyes by not being filtered from the liver. The treatment of Wilson’s Disease, which occurs with the deterioration of copper metabolism, is possible with early diagnosis.

  • Eye Examination: Kayser-Fleischer ring caused by excessive copper accumulation in the eye
  • Liver Biopsy: amount of copper detected in a small piece of tissue taken from the liver
  • Genetic Tests: Tests with a family history of Wilson’s disease
  • Blood Test: Checking the ceruloplasmin level to detect the copper level in the blood

How should Wilson’s patients be fed?

Since it is a copper absorption disease, foods with high copper content should not be consumed in their diet. These foods are;

  • Shellfish; lobster, oyster, mussel, crab, shrimp
  • Sakatat (kalp, beyin, karaciğer, böbrek, işkembe) , domuz eti, somon balığı
  • Legumes group (dried beans, kidney beans, peas, red lentils, chickpeas)
  • Chocolate, cakes and drinks containing cocoa
  • Dark vegetables (spinach, arugula, parsley), mushrooms, juices of vegetable dishes
  • Mineral water and alcoholic beverages
  • Dried fruits (apricots, plums, grapes)
  • Grain cereals (whole wheat, rye, bran bread, barley, wheat)
  • It is forbidden to consume sweet fresh potatoes.

NOTE: Drinking water should definitely be analyzed and the copper level should be checked.
